LAWSON Introduces Voluntary CO2 Reduction Targets

2008/03/31
Aiming for Per-store CO2 Emissions 10% Lower Than 2006 by 2012
LAWSON, INC. ("LAWSON") has set new voluntary CO2 reduction targets in order to help combat the growing threat of global warming. LAWSON aims to reduce CO2 emissions per store by 10% from 2006 levels by 2012.

The total targeted reduction from 2006 levels will equate to approximately 60,000 tons of CO2. Furthermore, LAWSON's target would equate to a 30% reduction from 1990 levels (calculated by total floor area times operating hours), the base year for the Japanese convenience store industry's voluntary CO2 reduction plan for meeting Japan's Kyoto Protocol targets. By way of reference, the Japanese convenience store industry has set a 23% reduction target from 1990 levels.

LAWSON will continue working with customers to achieve CO2 reductions and help prevent global warming.

Main Initiatives for Reducing CO2 Emissions in Stores:

1) Equip new stores with Energy-Saver Packs, an integrated cooling and ventilation system.
This system consolidates the outside units for chilling, refrigeration and air conditioning, which are conventionally controlled separately, thereby boosting efficiency.

2) Install Eco-Pack automatic control systems in existing stores.
These "packs" use sensors to monitor store temperature and automatically adjust chilling and air conditioning units and the gas pressure of exterior anti-condensation heaters.

3) Introduce automatic adjustable lighting systems.
Sensors control lighting in areas near windows, making efficient use of natural sunlight thereby reducing electricity consumption.

4) Introduce reflectors in store signage to improve lighting.
We use reflectors in our store signage to help amplify lighting, enabling us to halve the number of fluorescent lights needed.

Initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions from operations other than at stores include such measures as improving fuel consumption for delivery trucks and company-owned cars, and forestry management activities.
